During the design process, Città designer Imogen Tunnicliffe was inspired by the unique aesthetics of the 1960s and 1970s. This inspiration is celebrated through the use of warm, textural wool and five saturated colour variations. Woven with New Zealand wool in a distinctive popcorn-style weave and reinforced with a sturdy cotton backing. Elegantly presented in a calico drawstring bag, allowing for easy transportation and thoughtful gifting. Handcrafted in a certified GoodWeave factory, the mat upholds the highest standards of ethical production. 

Due to its handcrafted nature, each piece is unique and may vary slightly in measurements. To preserve the weave, avoid vacuuming with a brush head, and be mindful that animal claws can catch and create pulls.

A Nostalgic Design Journey

During the design process, Città designer Imogen Tunnicliffe set out to create a durable wool mat in interesting yet easy-to-live-with colours.

“The idea of heavy woollen mats took me back to the 1960s and 1970s,” says Imogen. “I was inspired by the living spaces and furnishings from those eras, where rich, saturated colours were predominant—that typical retro palette of deep wine reds, mustard yellows, earthy green browns, and deep-sea blues.”

“Heavy textures and wool were especially popular. When combined with the colours of the time, they created warm, welcoming environments.”

Design Details

This inspiration is celebrated through the use of warm, textural New Zealand wool and five evocative colour variations.

The design was first released as a mat in 2024 and quickly became a sought-after piece. Due to its popularity, a larger wool rug was introduced the following year, expanding its versatility.

Handwoven in a distinctive popcorn-style weave and finished with plain weave edging on the short ends. A sturdy cotton backing adds durability and prevents curling.
